168 pages of structured, practical guidance on portfolio construction, cost management, and long-term wealth strategy for self-directed investors.

  1. 01

Why the Fee Conversation Starts Wrong

How to calculate the true 20-year cost of your current adviser relationship, and why AUM fees compound against you in ways the industry never advertises.

  2. 02

    Building Your Investment Policy Statement

The one document every institutional investor writes and almost no retail investor has. Defines your return target, risk tolerance, time horizons, and constraints in plain language.

  3. 03

    The Multi-Bucket Allocation Model

How to divide your capital across liquidity, growth, and long-term buckets — matching each pool to its actual time horizon and purpose rather than treating your portfolio as one undifferentiated mass.

  4. 04

Rebalancing: Rules, Triggers, and Tax Traps

When calendar rebalancing destroys value and when threshold-based rebalancing is the correct approach. How to rebalance in a tax-aware way that doesn’t generate unnecessary capital gains.

  5. 05

Active vs. Passive: A Framework, Not a Religion

The evidence on where active management adds value (and where it reliably doesn’t), and how to build a portfolio that applies each approach in the right context.

  6. 06

    The Annual Review Process

A repeatable checklist for reviewing your portfolio every year: evaluating performance in context, assessing whether your allocation still fits your life, and making structural changes without reacting to noise.

On why he wrote The Independent Portfolio Playbook

Jonathan Keld

Jonathan Keld · Former Institutional Portfolio Consultant

Q. Why did you write this, and why now?

I spent 18 years helping institutional clients — pension funds, endowments, family offices — build and manage their investment frameworks. When I started working with retail investors directly, I was struck by how much of what we took for granted in institutional contexts simply didn’t exist for individuals. Not because the knowledge was unavailable — but because no one had ever packaged it in a way that a thoughtful non-professional could actually use. This playbook is the thing I wish had existed when I started out.

Q. Who is this really for?

It’s for the investor who has been doing the right things — saving consistently, investing regularly — but has a nagging sense that they don’t fully understand what they’re doing or why. You don’t need a finance background. You need to be willing to think carefully about your situation and apply a structured framework. That’s what this provides.

Q. What will readers actually be able to do after reading it?

Three concrete things. First, they’ll be able to write a one-page Investment Policy Statement that defines what they’re actually trying to achieve. Second, they’ll be able to calculate the true cost of their current arrangements and decide whether those costs are justified. Third, they’ll have a repeatable annual review process they can use for the rest of their investing life. Those three things, done well, are worth far more than most adviser relationships.

Before you buy

Common questions

Everything you’d want to know before purchasing.

Is this for beginners or more experienced investors?

It’s written for investors at the “intermediate plateau” — people who understand the basics (index funds, diversification, tax-advantaged accounts) but feel like they’re missing a coherent framework. Beginners may need to revisit some sections, but there’s a glossary and recommended reading to support them.

What format is the playbook?

PDF, 168 pages. Formatted for both screen reading and print. No DRM — you can save it, print it, and share it with a partner or spouse. The fee audit worksheet in Chapter 1 is designed to be printed out and filled in by hand.

How do I receive it after purchase?

Instantly. As soon as your payment is processed, you’ll receive a download link by email. The file is typically under 8MB and downloads in a few seconds. If you don’t see the email within five minutes, check your spam folder or contact us.

What’s your refund policy?

30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. If you read it and it’s not what you expected, email Juanita.Jimenez@portfolioindependent.com within 30 days and we’ll refund you in full. See our full refund policy for details.

Do I get future updates?

Yes — free lifetime updates. When we release a new edition (we update annually to reflect changes in regulation, tax rules, and market structure), you’ll receive the new version at no additional cost. Your download link will always point to the latest edition.

Is this specific to one country?

The framework is global — portfolio construction principles apply regardless of where you’re based. Tax examples reference the UK and US primarily, but the underlying logic applies everywhere. Country-specific tax details are flagged throughout so you know when to consult a local professional.

What readers did with this

Real outcomes from real readers

These are the kinds of changes readers made after working through the playbook. Individual results vary.

Reduced total portfolio costs by 0.74% annually

“Chapter 1’s fee audit was genuinely shocking. I knew I was paying something but I’d never calculated it in compounded terms. The worksheet showed me I was on track to hand over $190,000 in fees over my working life. I switched providers and restructured within three weeks.”

Robert Ashby · Project manager, Edinburgh

Wrote his first Investment Policy Statement after 11 years of investing

“I’ve been investing for over a decade and I never had a written plan. The IPS template in Chapter 2 took me about two hours to complete and it immediately clarified three decisions I’d been sitting on for months. I finally reallocated out of a fund I knew wasn’t right and into something that actually fit my timeline.”

Priya Rajendran · Pharmacist, Melbourne

Moved from annual panic-rebalancing to a calm threshold-based system

“I used to rebalance every January regardless of what markets had done. After reading Chapter 4 I switched to a 5/25 threshold system. The first time I actually used it — in March after a sharp correction — I felt calm instead of reactive. That alone was worth the price of the book.”

Tom Frederiksen · Entrepreneur, Copenhagen
